Event Description

Professor Daniel Bradley, Trinity College Dublin, tells us that instead of explaining the past using modern genetics, it is now possible to directly examine whole genomes using ancient DNA extracted from archaeological bones. Work on these ancient Irish genomes in Trinity College is giving us new information on when our ancestors came to this island, and from where they came. It also tells us something about their genetic character and how it compares to modern people. The Northwest has its own particular genetic patterns, specifically the legacy of the sons of Niall of the Nine Hostages, Eoghan and Conaill. As well as living on in local place names, they may also have left an imprint in the local poplulation.

DNA Ársa agus Oidhreacht Ghéiniteach na hÉireann In áit scéal an am atá caite a léamh ó éagsúlacht ghéiniteach na linne seo, is féidir anois anailís a dhéanamh ar géanóim iomlána ón am atá thart trí anailísiú DNA ársa a dhéanamh ar cnámha seandálaíochta. Tá obair Trinity College ar géanóim ársa na hÉireann ag tabhairt léargais ar an áit agus an uair a tháinig ár sinsir chun an oileáin seo na mílte bliain ó shin. Tugann sé eolas dúinn fosta ar charachtar géiniteach s’acu i gcomparáid le daoine ar linne. Tá patrúin ghéiniteacha dá chuid féin ag an Iarthuaisceart fosta, leagáid chlann Niall Naoi-Ghiallach ach go háirithe. Ní amháin go bhfuil lorg Eoghain agus Chonaill le feiceáil sna logainmneacha áitiúla ach tá seans ann gur fhág siad lorg sna daonraí áitiúla fosta.
