Last week, Musicians without Borders returned to Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin to lead the third training in a series on community music leadership. This time, the sessions focused on exploring creativity as a workshop leader through songwriting, movement and percussion activities. The trainees were challenged to create their own activities and to lead a community workshop at the end of the training which invited the creative input of all participants.
A highlight of the training was the creation of an ‘eco-orchestra’, in which the trainees built instruments from various objects found in the streets, resulting in a spontaneous performance.
The power of creativity factors significantly into the work of MwB within post-conflict communities. Such group activities as building musical instruments create connections and empathy between participants as they work together. This process of creativity will continue to develop amongst the trainees, as they prepare to become community music workshop leaders.
